Kari Brown, 43, worked for 25 years at area hair salons until last year, when she became a stay-at-home mom. She lives in Rock Falls with her husband, Mike Brown, 45, her son, Josh Arthurs, 18, and her daughter, Taylor Brown, 5. Kari is the daughter of Carl Frederick and Pam Zinanni, both of Rock Falls, and has a brother, Kevin Frederick, 45, of Chicago.
Alma mater: I graduated in 1983 from Rock Falls High School, and went to Educators of Beauty.
Philosophy: Work hard and be honest. Live each day to its fullest.

Hearts: Photography, making jewelry, doing hair, watching "Desperate Housewives" and "The Bachelor."
Darts: When you call customer service lines and they keep redirecting you, and the issue never gets resolved.
Haunts: The movies and water parks. And in my basement, playing Ping-Pong and watching movies.
First job: Hardee's in Rock Falls. I was a cashier when I was 16. I liked it. It was the newest, most happening place at the time and taught me good work ethics.
First car: A 1983 Toyota Corolla. I was 17.
Read this: "The Shack," by William P. Young. It was spiritual.
