DIXON – June Carolyn Shaffer, 82, of Dixon, died Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at Prentice Women's Hospital, Chicago.
She was a part-time teacher's aide for the Dixon public schools for 10 years; worked part time for the Dixon Public Library for more than 25 years; and as a deputy clerk for the Lee County Clerk's Office for 10 years prior to her retirement in 1989.
June was born July 3, 1927, in Ogle County, near Oregon, the daughter of Claire and Myrna (Gruber) Baker.
She was an active member and organist for Dixon Church of the Brethren, and active in the Phidian Art Club, Petunia City Quilt Guild, and Sauk Valley Community Concert Association. June was a volunteer for Heritage Square, Leydig Center, Meals on Wheels, and Washington School Library.
Survivors include one son, Dennis Shaffer of Chicago; four daughters, Dona Hoekenga of Las Cruces, N.M., Diane Lacopo of Springfield, Marilyn (Edward) Muehsam of Marion, Iowa, and Nancy (Tom) Rich of Dixon; two brothers, Claire John Baker of Dixon and Larry (Inga) Baker of Kimmell, Ind.; one sister, Louise Brechon of Rockford; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Rachel Cervantes; one grandson, Joshua Muntean; and two brothers, Gene and Rodney Baker.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dixon Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Stan Rodabaugh, pastor, officiating.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.
As requested by June, her body was donated to the University Of Iowa Carver College Of Medicine for medical research.
A memorial has been established.
