AMBOY – Louis E. Grasser, 76, of Amboy, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Illinois Veterans Home, LaSalle.

Louis was born Feb. 9, 1933, in McNabb, the son of Ralph L. and Marjorie (Morgensen) Grasser.
He was raised on a farm in the rural McNabb area, and farmed in the McNabb-Varna area.

Louis worked for the U.S. Postal Service on the Chicago-Omaha train. He worked as a Standard Oil agent in Henry, then in 1962, was transferred to Amboy in the same capacity. He also was an installation technician for Contel Telephone Co. (Verizon) for 24 years, retiring in 1993. Louis was a combat veteran of the Army during the Korean War. He was an EMT and fireman for Amboy and Sublette fire departments.

Louis was a certified umpire in baseball, and registered in basketball with  the IHSA. He officiated both sports at the Little League, high school, college, and Legion levels for many years. Louis umpired professional minor league baseball in the Midwest and Carolina leagues. He was an honorary official of the IHSA.

Louis was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Nachusa, serving the Lutheran church in many capacities. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 25th Infantry Association, Combat Infantryman Association, and American Legion, serving as an honor guard.

He married Hetta Baker on July 18, 1952, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, McNabb.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; and one granddaughter, Lisa Ann Nauman.

He is survived by his wife, Hetta of Amboy; children, Lynda Grasser of San Francisco and Dalzell, Laurie (Dan) Nauman of Amboy, Diane (Steve) Delhotal of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Cheryl (Bill) Gross of Danvers, Ralph Scott Grasser of Afghanistan, and Eric Grasser of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, Dana (Kasey) Considine of Amboy; Nick Nauman of Dallas, Luke (Brandy) Delhotal and Eli (Abbi) Delhotal, both of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Jesse Colt Gross of Danvers, and Chris Gross of Tehachapi, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Shatinka Gross of California; two sisters, Donna Forney of McNabb and Sharon Kline of Machesney Park; and many nieces and nephews.

Local visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Scripture reading at 7:30 p.m., Monday at Mihm-Jones Funeral Home, Amboy.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Emmaus Lutheran Church, McNabb, with the Revs. Ann Ziegert and Brant Clements co-officiating.

Burial, with military graveside honors by Amboy American Legion, will be at Friends Cemetery, McNabb. Visitation also will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

A memorial has been established.
