SYCAMORE – A man accused of a Tuesday night shooting in DeKalb made his first appearance in DeKalb County court Thursday.
Bond was set at $500,000 for Kendall Rogers, 33, of DeKalb. Rogers has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
A warrant for Rogers was issued Wednesday, and he was arrested in Naperville about 9 p.m. Wednesday night.
Police said Rogers got into an argument with another man at the University Village apartment complex at 915 Crane Drive about 7 p.m. Tuesday. Rogers shot the victim in the pelvic region, and both men left the scene before police arrived. About 7:30 p.m., police were notified the victim had driven himself to Kishwaukee Community Hospital. His injuries were not life threatening, according to police.
DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler said Thursday police do not believe the incident was gang-related but have not made any clear determination as to its cause.
“We’re still trying to hammer out a motive,” Spangler said. “It appears to have been an argument about money, but we’re still working on that.”
During the investigation, two guns and about two pounds of marijuana were seized from the apartment of an acquaintance of Rogers, Spangler said. Police believe one of the guns was the weapon used in the shooting, but forensic tests must be done before they can be sure, he said.
Aggravated battery with a firearm is punishable by up to 30 years in prison. Aggravated discharge of a firearm is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and possession of a weapon by a felon is punishable by up to seven years in prison.
Rogers is due back in court on May 5.
