DIXON – Donald Eugene Sheets, 70, of Dixon, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at KSB Hospital. He was an insurance producer with Wickert Insurance Agency, Dixon, and served as Dixon’s mayor from 1991 to 1999.
Donald was born Feb. 21, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Alvin Eugene and Dorothy (Johnson) Sheets.
He served in the Army from 1962 to 1966. He married Virginia Q. Ellwanger on Feb. 14, 1964, in Rockford.
Donald was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Dixon, where he served as choir director and organist–pianist for more than 20 years. He also was a member of Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and American Legion. Donald was active in Barbershoppers (SPEBSQSA Inc.) and sang in several quartets. He was involved with starting the Voluntary Care Center of Lee County and the Main Street Program. He participated in the development of Ronald Reagan Trail; served on the Voluntary Care Center Board and Open Sesame Board, was a mentor in Dixon schools for several years; was active with Dixon High School plays and musicals, and Dixon Theater productions. Donald will be remembered for his favorite role as the Scarecrow in the “Wizard of Oz “and portraying Scrooge in the downtown Christmas walks. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Sheets of Dixon; two sons, David (Michele) Sheets of Rochelle and Mark (Vicki) Sheets of Dixon; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, including Jodi (Joe) McDivitt of Parkersburg, Iowa, and Robert (Lisa) Winterscheid of Waterloo, Iowa; and two special friends, Barney and Son-nie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Barbara Winterscheid.
Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, Dixon, with the Rev. Marilyn Nolan, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military graveside honors provided by Dixon combined veterans organizations will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., with family present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Grace United Methodist Church, Dixon, KSB Hospital EMS Department, and Voluntary Care Center of Lee County.
