GENEVA – Kent Shodeen has left his mark all over the Fox Valley area through his development projects.
But Shodeen also has left his mark through the time and money he has donated to numerous community organizations, including the Geneva History Center, CASA Kane County, Habitat for Humanity and Northern Illinois Food Bank.
"Kent has created a better community for us all," said Geneva Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Scott Lebin Tuesday night in naming Shodeen as the 2010 recipient of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce's esteemed Wood Community Service award.
The Wood award is presented each year to an individual who has made significant community contributions in the areas of business, education, youth involvement, civic organizations, art, recreation, charity or government.
The award is named in honor of Bill and Elise Wood, and Nell and Burton Wood – four individuals who have all contributed to the growth and health of the city of Geneva.
Lebin himself received the award in 2008.
Shodeen, founder and CEO of Shodeen, Inc., humbly accepted the award.
"I've always been proud to be a resident of Geneva," Shodeen said. "It is a great city."
Shodeen took note that some of his development plans have generated controversy.
"I could never win an election," he said. "Even dog catcher might be tough."
However, "All in all, we work together. I really do feel that I've had a nice partnership," Shodeen said.
Kent, his wife Joan and their four children Beth, Craig, Eric and Anna, have called Geneva home for more than 50 years.
His daughter, Anna Harmon, shared what she hopes her dad is best remembered for.
"For being a great father, grandfather and friend," Harmon said. "For how generous he is to his family, friends and community and that he has an amazing gift of looking at land and seeing what it could be in 10-15 years."
