DIXON — Steven R. McConnell, 90, of Dixon, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Franklin Grove Nursing Center. He owned McConnell & Son Roofing and Siding before his retirement.

Steven was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Mount Morris, the son of Charles and Margaret (Rosenbaum) McConnell.

He married Patsy Russell on Aug. 2, 1967, in Morrison. She preceded him in death on May 11, 2009. Steven served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, during World War II. He was a member of Dixon Church of the Brethren and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 540.

Survivors include one son, John (Eileen) McConnell of Kirksville, Mo.; one daughter, Jane McConnell of St. Louis; one stepson, Steven (Tammy) Christiansen of Dixon; one stepdaughter, Kimberley (Clint) Simester of Dixon; two brothers, Robert McConnell of Dixon and John (Pat) McConnell of Quincy; nine grandchildren, Dan, Suzi, Marc, Debra, Tony, Jeff, Sheila, Elenore, and Shawn; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Steven also was preceded in death by two brothers, Abraham McConnell and William McConnell; and four sisters, Clara Early, Mae Buccola, Mary Johns, and Ruth Kanzler.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dixon Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Stan Rodabaugh, pastor, officiating. Burial, with full military graveside services provided by the combined veterans’ organizations, will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon.

A memorial has been established to Ogle County Hospice.
