AMBOY – Robert L. Garst Sr., 73, of Amboy, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at his home.

He was born July 22, 1937, in Dixon, the son of Virgil L. and Sarah A. (Henson) Garst. He married Carolyn Rainey in Dixon in 1978. She preceded him in death on Aug. 4, 2005.

He was a block maker for Eller and Willie Block Co., Dixon, for many years. He also worked for Lawrence Brothers, Rock Falls, retiring in 1999.

Survivors include five children, Rocky (Lisa) Garst of Rockton, Amanda (Ed) Messenger of Amboy, Robert Garst Jr. and Becky (Emory) Grantham, both of Machesney Park, and Robert (Denise) Garst III of Pekin; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Garst of Polo; and one sister, Gladys Ausmus of Springfield.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherrill and Donald; and two sisters, Hazel and Betty.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mihm-Jones Funeral Home, Amboy. There will be no services. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established to KSB Hospice.
