Lighthouse United Methodist Church will hold a church service that celebrates 175 years of worship on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 9 a.m.

Members of the congregation will relate the history of the church which has served the area as a religious and community center for so many years.

Photographs and memorabilia will be on display.

A meal provided by Ralphie and Lulu's restaurant, Ashton, will be served at noon.

In 1836 Dr. John and Elizabeth Roe with their five young boys settled in their log cabin built on a bluff northwest of the present church.

The light that Elizabeth placed in her window guided her husband and weary travelers to safety on stormy nights.

The Roe cabin was one of several locations used for worship in those early years.

In 1846 a stone church was built below the log cabin, and the name of Light House was given to it.

In 1876 the stone church was taken down, and a brick veneer structure was built on the same site.

This was used until Sunday, April 3, 1932 when it burned to the ground after church service.

The members quickly rallied to rebuild, and the cornerstone of the present church was laid on Sept. 4 of that year with 500 people in attendance.

A worship service was held for the first time on Jan. 20, 1933 and a dedication service followed in May.

Lighthouse United Methodist Church is located at 4938 S. Daysville Road, Oregon and is handicapped accessible.
