WAUKEGAN – Two replicas of Columbus’ ships, The Pinta and The Nina, will dock at the Waukegan Harbor, 55 S. Harbor Place July 26 and depart early on July 30.
Both ships are part of a sailing museum of the Columbus Foundation in the British Islands to educate children and the public on caravels, which were common trading vessels in use during the Age of Discovery.
Waukegan Harbor director, Brion O’Dell, said the sailing museum docked the Waukegan Harbor four years ago and the staff is happy to have the exhibit again this year.
“This a chance to see living examples of our history. I think it’s especially important for children to learn about their history, not only through a book,” O’Dell said.
Although the harbor is mainly a commercial and shipping port, O’Dell said occasionally, there are educational events such as this one.
When docked, the general public can visit the ships and walk aboard on a self-guided tour that runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The caravel, The Nina, was built by hand and without the use of power tools. “Archeology” magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.”
According to the website www.thenina.com, the Nina was Columbus’ favorite caravel, as he chose it out of 17 ships as his flagship on his second exploratory voyage to Cuba.
It logged at least 25,000 miles under Columbus’ command.
The Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina.
Adult ticket prices are $8; senior citizens $7; students ages 5 – 16 are $6 and children 4 and younger are free.
Parking at the harbor is free.
Teachers and organizations can schedule a 30-minute guided tour with a crew member, with a minimum of 15 people at $4 per person, by calling 787-672-2152.
