Flashback: 1967 band Saracens to ‘Corral’ at Lyons Township High School sock hop

The Saracens, fresh from being named one of the top three rock bands in the western suburbs by Suburban Life in 1967, reunite for a benefit sock hop at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in The Corral on the south campus of Lyons Township High School, 4940 S. Willow Springs Road, Western Springs.

The group was organized by Frank Glas, who describes them as five guys who went to LTHS in the late '60s, who have reformed their rock band and are playing again.

"You're never too old to rock'n'roll," he says.

The 1960s style sock hop will entertain from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., and offers refreshments including Ledo's Pizza.

The Saracens band was named after a British fighting vehicle. The group plays such songs as "Johnny B. Goode," "Heart Full of Soul," "You Really Got Me," "Midnight Hour," "Mustang Sally," "Knock on Wood," "Ticket to Ride," "Route 66," "Dirty Water" and "Till There was You."

Fifty percent of all proceeds from the sock hop will benefit The Corral. Glas remembers his days at The Corral fondly, and wants to help maintain it as a place for students to visit and socialize.

Tickets cost $20 and are available by e-mailing Glas at glas.frank@yahoo.com. They also will be sold at the door starting at 6:30 p.m.
