Former Brookfield, Indian Head Park police chief John Hymel dies

Retired Brookfield and Indian Head Park Police Chief John C. Hymel died Friday at the age of 80.

Hymel was a dedicated member of the Brookfield Police Department for 35 years, serving as chief of police for 13.

In 1984, he was the first chief from Brookfield to serve as president of the West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association. After retiring from Brookfield in 1993, Hymel later served as chief of police in Indian Head Park.

“Chief Hymel was a true leader and innovator who helped to pave the way for future generations of law enforcement,” a statement released from the Brookfield Police Department said. “He served us and our community extremely well, and he will be missed.”

A memorial visitation for Hymel will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 5015 Lincoln Ave., Lisle.
