Doris Carlson

PRINCETON — Doris Carlson, 95, of Princeton passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Perry Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1917, in Walnut to Olaf and Amy (Polson) Espel. She attended grade school in Walnut and graduated from Princeton High School in 1935.

She then graduated from nurses training at Augustana Hospital in Chicago. Doris joined the Army Nurses Corps and served in France, Belgium, and Germany from 1943-1945 at an evacuation hospital. Her unit was awarded the bronze star. She married Robert Carlson on Sept. 14, 1946. He died in 1980. Following the war, Doris and her husband moved to the Chicago area where Doris worked at Hines VA Hospital. Later she worked at Colonial Hall after she and Robert moved back to this area. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church of Princeton.

Doris is survived by her five children, John (Bonnie) Carlson of New Hampshire, Richard Carlson of Colorado, Mary (Jim) Baker of Princeton, Wayne (Mary Ellen) Carlson of Springfield, and Roy (Ann) Carlson of Florida. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Kristi (Baker) Durbin, Robert (Liz) Baker, Kathleen Carlson and Lynn Carlson; four great-grandchildren, Ella and Lily Durbin, and Jacob and Ryan Baker; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sets of twin sisters.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church. Pastor Norman Femrite officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. Military rites will be performed.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Norberg Memorial Home and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
