Rita Crundwell transferred to Minnesota prison

CHICAGO – A former northern Illinois comptroller sentenced this year for stealing nearly $54 million from her community is now in prison in Minnesota.

The Telegraph in Dixon reports (http://bit.ly/11pGnTt) that Rita Crundwell was transferred Monday to the minimum-security women's Federal Correctional Institution in Waseca, Minn. Crundwell admitted she stashed the public money in a secret bank account for decades. She used the funds to pay for a lavish lifestyle and a horse-breeding operation.

Crundwell was transferred to Minnesota from an interim federal holding facility in Chicago. She had been in Chicago since February, when a Rockford judge sentenced the 60-year-old to nearly 20 years in prison.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons gives her release date as March 5, 2030.
