Construction begins on Cicero Walmart Supercenter

CICERO – It's been eight years since the idea of building a Walmart Supercenter in Cicero was first thrown on the table. On Wednesday, the first shovel of dirt was dug to officially start construction of the new Walmart Supercenter at 3400 S. Cicero Ave.

City officials and Wal-Mart representatives met at the site for a groundbreaking ceremony on the Supercenter that is expected to provide 400 jobs, additional tax revenue and spur economic development in the area.

"This day has been a very long time coming. It's just one more step we are taking to ensure the future economic viability of our community," Cicero President Larry Dominick said.

The 177,557 square-foot Supercenter will feature enhanced services and an easy-to-navigate layout designed to make the shopping experience more convenient for customers, according to town officials. Wal-Mart aligned the departments that customers shop most frequently, including grocery, pharmacy, health and beauty and pet supplies, designed to save customers time as they shop for everyday necessities.

A bright, interior color palette was chosen to create an inviting shopping experience and help define the store’s merchandise areas.

The Supercenter offers customers an expanded electronics department featuring a wide selection of the latest consumer electronics and home entertainment. The new design includes a more hands-on experience for customers with interactive displays for hi-definition Blu-ray, video gaming and portable electronics. The interactive experience enables shoppers to test new technology.

The Supercenter is expected to be complete in early summer 2014.
