Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week: Matt Plowman

York junior cross country runner Matt Plowman was a part of the Dukes’ domination at the Class 3A Fenwick regional Saturday at Schiller Woods in Chicago. Plowman set the pace early in the race and finished with teammates Nathan Mroz, Alex Bashqawi and Kyle Mattes at the same time (15:04) and York took the top four spots at the regional race.

The Dukes took first in the team standings with 20 points, 57 ahead of the second place team. Plowman, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the regional race and the races still ahead.

How do you think the regional race went for you and the team?

It felt pretty good and I think we ran really well. We just got the job done that we needed to do [Saturday].

At what point in the race did you decide to make a move and separate from the pack?

I thought we sort of distanced ourselves a little bit earlier in the race. They were still with us with like two miles to go, so right then we thought we needed to move.

Does it help when you have teammates finishing in front with you?

Totally. It’s a lot easier.

What do you think your team’s chances are at the state race?

We’ve got a really good team this year and of course our goal is to win a state title.
