Gerald Schertz

Gerald Lee Schertz was tragically killed while traversing Jefferson Street at the end of a busy workday.

He was born on Christmas Eve, 1945, in the middle of a Midwestern snowstorm. He had an idyllic childhood being raised on a farm in Danvers, Ill., by two loving parents, Lois and Marion Schertz.

Jerry attended Michigan State University where he completed an honors biochemistry degree in three years. He graduated first in his class from the University of Chicago Medical School in 1971. He completed his internship, residency and chief residency and oncologic fellowship at Yale University in 1977. In July of that year, he and his family moved to Roanoke where he started the area’s first oncologic partnership.

He was well known to the Roanoke community for his tireless work ethic and compassion. Jerry was a devoted husband to his wife and fellow globetrotter of 42 years, Denise. His two greatest accomplishments were his two children, his son, Matthew, and daughter, Meghan. Jerry adored his daughter-in-law, Kelly, grandson, William, and granddaughter, Keilan. He is also survived by his two younger sisters, Jody Johnson and Janet Estes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Red Cross Disaster Relief or charity of donor’s choice.

A memorial service will be at noon Wednesday at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel. The family will receive friends on Wednesday following the service.

Arrangements by Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel.
