DOWNERS GROVE – The doors on the Downers Grove North Athletic Hall of Fame will swing open this weekend, and Alberto Quintana and Will Kupisch will step inside.
Quintana, DGN class of 1982, and Kupisch, a longtime cross country and track and field coach, will be inducted at 7 p.m. Saturday before Downers Grove North's boys basketball team takes on Oak Park-River Forest at 7:30 p.m.
Quintana was a four-year letter winner in baseball, from 1972-82, and was an all-conference selection in 1982. He went on to play at Northwestern, where he won another four letters before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986. He played in the Spanish National League from 1992-94, went on to be a scout for the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres, and was the hitting and infield coach at Benedictine University from 1999-2000.
Kupisch served as head boys cross country coach at North from 1990-2011 and was an assistant track and field coach for 33 years. He coached the cross country team to four top-10 team finishes at the state meet, including third place in 2000, and had 11 all-state cross country runners in that time. As a track coach, he coached 14 all-state performers, including 1981 shot put champ Joe Marconi and the 4x800-meter relay team that won in 2001.
