LA GRANGE – Students at Lyons Township High School have been making a name for themselves in multiple extra curricular activities and clubs in recent weeks.
Here are a few of their latest achievements:
1. Future chefs head to state competition
Four students qualified to compete at the STAR Culinary Arts competition – run similarly to the popular television Iron Chef contest – this coming March at Kendall College in Chicago.
Juniors Daniel Arellano, Ahmed Arif, Martha Harris and senior Xavier Del Valle qualified for the next competition after participating in the Family Career and Community Leaders of America Sectional Culinary Arts Competition. The high school originally sent six students to the FCCLA to qualify in mid-February.
2. Literary Magazine wins top award in two nationwide contests
The high school's literary magazine, Menagerie, was recently awarded with the American Scholastic Press Association's First Place with Special Merit award, as well as an award for Outstanding Art. LT's 2013 publication was also recently honored with the Superior award from the National Council of Teachers of English in their Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines.
3. Car Care Club crosses the finish line into 3rd place
The LT Car Care Club took third place, out of 22 teams, in the Universal Technical Top Tech Challenge Feb. 6. The winning team – seniors Ryan Fox and Ben Huffman – each went home with a $250 scholarship.
4. Business students qualify for state competition
A total of 44 students in the Lyons Township High School Business Professionals of America Club qualified to compete in the state competition. The BPA state competition will be held Thursday through Saturday at the Double Tree Hotel in Oak Brook.
5. Model United Nations Club claims 3rd place
The high school's Model U.N. team took third place in the Chicago International Model United Nations competition this past January. The competition, held at the Millennium Park Fairmont Hotel, had 50 schools participating with more than 1,000 delegates. LT's team consisted of 56 students and nine former students who assisted with the event.
