Berwyn police fundraiser may have broken state record

BERWYN – The Berwyn Police Department's Tip-a-Cop fundraiser held April 22 may have broke a state record when it raised more than $10,000 for Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Hosted by Buffalo Wild Wings, the second annual Tip-a-Cop fund-raising event was held throughout the day and brought in large crowds for both the afternoon lunch and dinner- time customers, Police Chief Jim Ritz said. Berwyn police officers worked with Buffalo Wild Wings staff as celebrity waiters, servers and hosts throughout the day to benefit the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois.

Ritz praised the Buffalo Wild Wings staff and Berwyn police department volunteers, and "most importantly the community and customers who came out to support this tremendous event," Ritz said.

The money raised is used to support Special Olympics Illinois events and the department's mission of inclusion and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities in communities throughout the state.

Matt Johnson, the director of Marketing and Events for Special Olympics Illinois, said he Berwyn event was the most successful Tip-a-Cop fundraiser that he can recall for Special Olympics.
