Thomas Brethauer ended his high school gymnastics career on a high note by tying for second on the still rings at the state meet. His 9.1 gave him a state medal. Next year he will be competing in club gymnastics at the University of Illinois along with classmate Strah Sopcic. Brethauer, the Sears Appliance and Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about his medal-winning performance and his high school career.
Were you expecting this going into the state meet?
No, to be honest, not really. I was just trying to make finals. That was kind of the goal from the beginning. I came [Saturday] morning and had a bit of a rough set so I was happy to be in finals, but I don't think I expected to place so high.
What was your reaction when you hit the routine?
Sticking the double was just so exciting. Finishing a routine like that is just about the best feeling for a gymnast when you stick a dismount like that.
So you knew right away that was going to be a great score?
Yeah, I think so. After the second giant I knew I had a good shot and the double was just icing on the cake.
How does this rank with your gymnastics accomplishments?
It's been a great four years. Starting as a freshman was a great experience. I never expected starting as a freshman to be here at state finals.
