The softball season wrapped up Saturday with a pair of state title games. With the season in the books, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the accomplishments of some of the top players from local schools with the 2014 softball all-area team.
Jenna Boyajian
School: Morton
Year: Senior
Impact: After suffering a torn ACL in the middle of last season, Boyajian returned to be an all-conference player for the Mustangs in her senior year while splitting time between first base and catcher.
Jenna Cairo
School: Fenwick
Year: Senior
Impact: Cairo had arguably the best offensive season in the area with a .466 batting average, eight home runs and 24 extra base hits, 28 RBIs and 38 runs scored. The Lewis University commit was East Suburban Catholic all-conference.
Mary Grace Chizewski
School: Nazareth
Year: Junior
Impact: The all-area MVP emerged as a top player for the Roadrunners, batting .350 with a team-high 34 RBIs, 16 extra base hits and more walks (21) than strikeouts (18). Chizewski played shortstop and batted clean up.
Stefanie D’Anna
School: Lyons Township
Year: Senior
Impact: The Lions' second baseman hit .430 with a team-best 29 runs scored for the Lions this season. The Concordia recruit was all-conference in the West Suburban Silver.
Mia Davis
School: Nazareth
Year: Sophomore
Impact: The young first baseman had a breakout season for the Roadrunners, hitting a team-best .419 with 30 RBIs and 35 runs scored. She struck out just six times.
Susan Ghuneim
School: Morton
Year: Senior
Impact: The powerful third baseman finished her high school career with a strong season, earning all-conference honors in the West Suburban Gold.
Kendall Hastings
School: Riverside Brookfield
Year: Sophomore
Impact: Following in the footsteps of her older sister, Emily, who is a catcher for SIU-Edwardsville, Kendall Hastings had a monster year. Hastings hit .482 with 14 extra base hits and just seven strikeouts.
Lana Herrmann
School: Riverside Brookfield
Year: Junior
Impact: Herrmann emerged as one of the most dangerous hitters in RB's lineup, hitting .442 with seven home runs, 26 extra base hits and 39 RBIs. She also walked 23 times for a .579 on-base percentage.
Colleen McGivney
School: Nazareth
Year: Senior
Impact: The Roadrunners' third baseman hit .360 with 13 doubles this spring to earn all-conference honors in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
Kayla Morrissey
School: Lyons Township
Year: Senior
Impact: The standout basketball player was also a stalwart for LT softball, hitting .364 with 14 extra base hits and just one strikeout, all while playing the crucial position of catcher.
Jessica Mrozek
School: Fenwick
Year: Senior
Impact: Despite not being able to pitch for most of the season due to a back injury, the James Madison recruit stood out with the bat by hitting .365.
Katie O’Connell
School: Riverside Brookfield
Year: Junior
Impact: O'Connell pitched for the Bulldogs, but truly stood out at the plate. She hit .477 with 16 extra base hits, 30 RBIs, 29 runs scored and impressively didn't strike out all season in 117 plate appearances.
Ashley Parenti
School: Fenwick
Year: Senior
Impact: The Loyola recruit finished her Fenwick career with a standout season. She hit .465 with 10 extra base hits, 27 runs scored and a team-high 15 walks.
