DIXON – John K. Schryver, 63, of Dixon, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. John was a counselor for 21 years at the Dixon Correctional Center before his retirement in 2006.
John was born Nov. 26, 1950, in Dixon, the son of Kenneth and Jacky (Beach) Schryver. He graduated from Dixon High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in anthropology and sociology, and Master of Science degree in education from Northern Illinois University. He married Laurie Koepp on Dec. 22, 1973, in Chicago, and spent the remainder of his life with her. John was an active softball player until the birth of his son, Jason, in 1980. He always got a laugh out of tricking family and friends with his uncanny ability to stack the deck in Euchre games. John was a voracious reader, and loved to travel. He especially loved beach vacations, and could often be found reading and sipping red wine on the balcony or by the pool. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, and St. Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie of Dixon; one son, Jason (Lisa) Schryver of Chicago; and one brother, Marty (Mary Ellen) Schryver of Dixon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday and a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. Cremation rites have been accorded. A gathering of family and friends will follow the memorial service at Elks Page Park in Dixon.
