HOMER GLEN – Dozens of customers at a new Meijer super store in Homer Glen were already shopping before the start of an opening ceremony Tuesday morning.
Meijer and Homer Glen village officials gathered at the store on 14169 S. Bell Road at 10 a.m. to celebrate its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Another ceremony was also planned for a new Meijer store in Mokena in the afternoon.
Both locations represent more than 200 Meijer stores that have opened since the Michigan-based business was established in 1934. Homer Glen Mayor Jim Daley was pleased with Meijer coming to the village.
“When you get a commitment for a project such as this, it shows they’re not afraid to invest in Homer Glen,” he said at the ceremony.
Daley has said the store will be a "big sales tax generator" for the village. The store will also bring more jobs. Meijer officials said both Homer Glen and Mokena stores will create 600 new jobs.
Hank Meijer, Meijer co-chairman, said he’s sees tremendous opportunity for Meijer in Homer Glen.
“This is just community that feels like home for us,” he said.
