Upcoming community events at Downers Grove Saint Mary of Gostyn

Saint Mary of Gostyn has plenty of activities on tap for August and September for both Parish members and the community. Jill Tierney, director of development and marketing, recently shared about those activities.

Question: Tell me about some of your community events.
Answer: St. Mary of Gostyn will be hosting its annual 5K on Saturday, Aug. 23, Parish Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 31 and Golf Outing on Friday, Sept. 12. The SMG 5K event includes a one mile youth race and 5K run/walk chip-timed event in Downers Grove. The SMG 12^th Annual Golf Outing will be held at Willow Crest Golf Club at Oak Brook Hills Resort in Oak Brook. The golf event includes lunch and a four-person team scramble. After golf, dinner will be served with an awards presentation, raffle drawings and post-dinner party.

Question: Which event is most popular and why?
Answer: All three events are very popular among different individuals. The 5K has large participation community-wide. It's a family-friendly event with no limitation on participants and offers competitive runners a chip-timed race. The Parish Picnic offers activities for all ages and is free of charge to attend.

Question: What is the goal of your events and why are these events important to SMG and/or the community?
Answer: Proceeds from the SMG 5K and Golf Outing benefit St. Mary of Gostyn. Events like these support the SMG parish, SMG school and the over 100 ministries that are part of St. Mary of Gostyn. Volunteers work hard to make these events enjoyable and strive to build camaraderie among all participants. The Parish Picnic, another popular event, is not a fundraiser, but strictly a community-building event with many fun activities for all ages.
