Athletes of the Week
Anna Marchetti, sr.
Sarah Yoon, jr.
Crystal Lake Central
Marchetti and Yoon rolled through the FVC Tournament bracket Oct. 11, beating the top three seeds to win the No. 4 doubles title as an unseeded team. In pool play, the Tigers' pair went 2-1. They lost to No. 3 seed Julia Kopfman and Alicia Rasmussen of Crystal Lake South, 8-2, but qualified for the championship bracket. In the first round of bracket play they beat No. 2 seed Veronica Jewell and Andrea Vannatta of Prairie Ridge, 6-3, 7-5, and in the second round avenged their loss against the Gators with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. In the title match they beat No. 1 seed Kori Kent and Caroline Bayer of Jacobs, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3.
Noteworthy
Sectional seeding: The top four seeds at No. 1 singles at the FVC Tournament also took the top four spots at the Huntley Sectional. Jacobs' Ashley Kosy took the top seed with her FVC win, and Prairie Ridge's Annie Timm gets the No. 2 seed as a result of making it to the FVC finals.
Rounding out the seeds are Woodstock's Ana Fedmasu at No. 3, Hampshire's Hannah Hougland (No. 4), Jacobs' Haley Steinkamp (No. 5) and McHenry's Emily Zalewski (No. 6). If the lower seeds advance to the state qualifying quarterfinal round, Fedmasu would face Steinkamp and Hougland would see Zalewski.
Steinkamp is the only No. 2 singles player to be seeded and won the FVC Tournament.
In doubles, the Wolves' Mikaela McNally and Natalie Favia get the top seed after winning the FVC at No. 1 doubles followed their FVC finals opponent, Crystal Lake Central's Maddie Fox and Carley George.
Also seeded were Marian Central's Abby Waters and Sydney Waters at No. 3, Morgan Vachio and Sara Elliott (No. 4) Crystal Lake South's Danielle Baietto and Anusha Subramanian (No. 5) and Prairie Ridge's Morgan Riddell and Jenna Van Bosch (No. 6).
If they advance to the quarterfinals, Vachio and Elliott would play Baietto and Subramanian and the Waters would see Riddell and Van Bosch, the only seeded No. 2 doubles team.
D-C moves up: Dundee-Crown had its best FVC Tournament in recent memory, placing seventh with 58 points. At last year's tournament the Chargers were 14th, and in 2012 they tied for 12th.
D-C was led by Alyssa Anderson and Camille Knapik-Balch, who placed sixth at No. 1 doubles. The Chargers qualified for the championship bracket in five of the seven divisions.
