If your legs feel like they’ve been cast in concrete, there’s a chance you’ve contracted a flu virus. But with the absence of other telltale symptoms like fever, runny nose, body aches and frequent trips to the bathroom, there may be another cause for the feeling of heaviness in your legs.
If you have difficulty walking up stairs, leg pain, and a feeling of heaviness, there are various serious conditions you should be checked for. Fibromyalgia, Peripheral Artery Disease, and other nervous and circulatory system conditions should be ruled out by your doctor.
More common causes of heaviness in the legs are varicose veins or spider veins. Typical symptoms of vein-related diseases include fatigue, swelling, aching, itching, restless legs, a burning sensation, cramps, and skin discoloration.
Varicose veins develop when a vein is dilated or its valves become damaged, which causes blood to move in the wrong direction. It backs up inside the vein, leading to aching, swollen legs that feel heavy. Varicose veins can cause bleeding, changes in skin color, and leg ulcers.
Spider veins develop when tiny blood vessels just below the skin's surface dilate. Clusters of spider veins can give the appearance of a bruise. Spider veins can form due to heredity, injury, pregnancy, or hormonal changes. These veins are generally not harmful, but their appearance can cause some to feel self-conscious. In rare cases, these vessels can bleed, causing more serious problems.
