Dr. Thomas E. Murphy

GLENVIEW – Dr. Thomas Edward Murphy, M.D., 80, of Glenview, formerly of Wilmette and Dixon, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, surrounded by family.

He was born June 10, 1934, in Dixon, the son of David and Helen (Sullivan) Murphy of Dixon. Thomas was a lifeguard on the Rock River. He was a cardiac surgeon for 37 years, and was chief cardiac thoracic surgeon at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, and Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Thomas served in the Army, and was chief of surgery at the 91st Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam.

He was the beloved husband of Jane (née Zacher); loving father of Dr. Timothy, M.D. (Dr. Lisa Lau, M.D.) Murphy, Annie (Frank) Timons, Kathleen (Thomas) McNeela, and Erin Murphy, family nurse practitioner; proud grandfather of Jack and Gavin Murphy, Patrick, Grace, Katherine, and John Timons, and Margaret and William McNeela; and dear brother of Rosemary Keough, Dr. Michael Murphy, M.D., Edward Murphy, Dennis (Barbara) Murphy, the late Dr. David, M.D. (Luana) Murphy, and the late Marcia Walsh; and the nephew of the late Dr. Edward Murphy of Dixon.

Visitation was Nov. 28 at Donnellan Family Funeral Home in Skokie. The Funeral Mass was Nov. 29 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
