ANTIOCH – What a year it has been for the Antioch girls basketball team. The Sequoits won 30 games and added some hardware to their team's legacy by winning the Wauconda Regional. This past week had some highs and lows as the season came to an end Monday night in supersectionals.

Sequoits capture sectional title

Getting to host a sectional is usually only a big deal if your team is fortunate enough to even make it to sectionals. Winning the sectional is icing on the cake. Antioch had the pleasure of winning a sectional that it hosted as the Sequoits defeated North Chicago 58-43. This was the first girls basketball sectional title in the school’s history. The large home crowd showed up to make the moment even more special as Antioch had the honor of cutting the nets down in their own gym.

Antioch took the lead early against North Chicago and would never really look back. The key for the Sequoits was their defense as they forced 21 North Chicago turnovers. The game did get a little close in the fourth quarter as the Warhawks cut the lead to single digits on a few occasions, but the Sequoits picked it up on defense each time and extended the lead. The Sequoits played North Chicago three times and won every match.

The Sequoits were led by Amy Reiser with 17 points. Carly McCameron added 13 points.

Antioch falls in super sectionals

With all the excitement and pride that came with the sectional title, the Sequoits had little time to celebrate. In order to earn a trip to Normal for the state finals, Antioch had the daunting task of facing Montini in the Hoffman Estates Supersectional. Unfortunately for the Sequoits, their magical season came to an end as Montini defeated Antioch 61-44. The Broncos landed their sixth straight appearance at state.

Monday’s game was back and forth and Antioch was able to tie the game early in the second quarter before Montini went on a 13-3 run to go up by 10 points in the second quarter. The Broncos led 35-28 at the half.

The third quarter found Antioch getting within five points on a few different occasions, but Montini stopped any chance of a trip to state for the Sequoits as the Broncos dominated the fourth quarter.

Antioch was led by Ashley Reiser who scored 15 points. Her sister Amy Reiser added 10 points.

This truly was an amazing season for the Sequoits. Antioch, who after starting the season 3-2, finished 30-4 and won a few tournaments before winning the North Suburban Prairie Division along with regionals and sectionals. The Sequoits will have several players back next year to build on the success of this season.
