GLEN ELLYN – Authentic Italian no longer means an Old World wait for Glen Ellyn residents.
In response to a demand for Italian carryout options in the Glen Ellyn area, husband and wife team Vincenzo and Paula Basile have opened Made in Italy Express, an Italian deli and grocery store. The business is located at 546 Crescent Blvd., around the corner from their restaurant, Made in Italy Trattoria.
The couple's latest venture includes selections of olive oils, vinegars and other Italian-imported items, as well as sandwiches, soups and desserts.
The Basiles opened the express shop to provide Italian food for customers with speed and convenience, including lunch service. The business also offers meals that are available at the restaurant that can be heated up and eaten at home.
Paula, who manages the deli, said she thinks the uniqueness of the couple's brand will appeal to those looking for fresh and tasty Italian.
“We don't make anything that anyone else makes,” she said. “We don't make pizza. This is basically Italian sandwiches and everything we use is basically from Italy, so there really isn't much like that down here.”
The store reflects the aesthetic of the trattoria.
"We figured the town needed something like this,” said Vincenzo. “People can come here and grab dinner after work. We got a little bit of something for everybody.”
The duo are excited to parlay their restaurant success into a deli and store.
Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mike Formento was optimistic about the future of the pair's new offering.
“Made In Italy is a long-time restaurant that has been in Glen Ellyn and now they have this satellite,” he said. “I think with their reputation, they will do extremely well in Glen Ellyn.”
