Joliet Township journalism students advance to state final competition

JOLIET – Joliet Central and West High School Journalism students competed in the IHSA Journalism Sectionals held at Joliet West High School this past weekend. Over 15 schools and 200 students participated.

Joliet Central student Krynn Paluga and Joliet West students Abasi Kelley, Mike Maticka, and Sydney Czyzon advanced to the State Finals which will be held May 1 at Eastern Illinois University.

Krynn Paluga received third place in Newspaper Design; Abasi Kelley received third place in Broadcast News; Mike Maticka received third place in InfoGraphics; and Sydney Czyzon received second place in News Writing.

Journalism advisors are VanDyne Martz and Jennifer Galloy.

The following Joliet West High School students also received an award:  Natalie Mander, fifth place in Yearbook Layout Double Page Spread; Mae Mastin, sixth place in Headline Writing; Madi Dobbs, sixth place in Feature Photography; Breeana Meadows, sixth place Feature Writing; Alannah Ramirez, sixth place Editorial Cartooning; Andrea Paolone & Serena Gregory, sixth place Yearbook Theme Development.
