Noted PGA instructor Jim Suttie will share his secrets for surviving the game of golf without hurting your back during a free clinic Thursday evening, June 25, in Oak Brook.
The clinic will begin at 7 p.m. in the Athletico Golf Performance Center, 1600 W. 16th St., and is sponsored by the Chicago District Golf Association, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, and Athletico Physical Therapy. Refreshments will be served.
The "Get Back in the Swing" event will include a free evaluation of your swing by golf athletic trainer Joe Estes, PT, DPT, CGFI. Estes, a certified golf fitness instructor at Athletico, also will discuss prevention exercises and how to keep your back in shape year-round.
Estes says prevention is important because research shows that 80 percent of golfers will experience back pain at some point in their lives.
Drs. Frank Phillips and Kern Singh, co-directors of the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, will explain common swing-related back and spine ailments and treatment options. Phillips also will discuss his recent study showing that 80 percent of all spine patients return to their former handicap or better after spinal fusion surgery.
The seminar is for golfers of all abilities, those with chronic or intermittent back issues, and those who are interested in preventing back conditions.
"Even minor adjustments to one's swing and stance can insure a lifetime of successful golfing, which is the name of the game," Suttie said.
Suttie, who has taught golfers worldwide for more than 42 years, is himself a back patient. After swinging the wrong way for a long time, he had surgery to insert a 6-inch steel rod and seven screws in his back. Now, with a doctorate in biomechanics, he has been helping golfers avoid the same mistakes.
Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush notes it is ranked the No. 6 orthopedic group in the nation by US News & World Report. The physicians are team doctors for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Fire Soccer Club.
Athletico Physical Therapy provides orthopedic rehabilitation services at 330 locations in nine states. Their services include physical and occupational/hand therapy, work rehabilitation, women's health therapy, pediatric physical therapy, concussion management and athletic training.
The Chicago District Golf Association is one of the largest and oldest golf associations in the country, promoting amateur golf throughout the Chicago area.
