Robert L. Glessner

FRANKLIN GROVE – Robert L. Glessner, 90, of Franklin Grove, formerly of Eldena, died Monday, July 6, 2015, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon.

He was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Dixon, the son of Leroy C. and Grace E. (McGlaughlin) Glessner. After graduation from Amboy High School, he was employed at the Green River Ordnance Plant until he entered the military. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, with 19 months in overseas duty in the European sector. He married Elfreda L. Tholen on March 29, 1947. He operated Glessner Bros. Wholesale until its closing in 1964. He then worked for Admiral Corp. until 1969. He retired in 1987 from Advance Products Co. of Rockford after 17 years as a sales representative. He was a member of American Legion Post 453 in Amboy and Dixon Elks Lodge 779.

Survivors include his daughter, Deborah (Butch) Burgett of Franklin Grove; two grandchildren, Kris (Bob) Bass of Franklin Grove and Chad Burgett of Boise, Idaho; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Haley, Zack, and Katelyn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elfreda; son, Greg Glessner; and brothers, Fred and Harold Glessner.

Cremation rights have been accorded. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Dixon, with the Rev. Vincent Marrandino, chaplain of KSB Hospital in Dixon, officiating. Interment, with full military honors accorded by the Dixon combined veterans organizations, will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Dixon Veterans Memorial Park.
