Self-neglect is defined as the inability of a person to perform essential self-care tasks; the failure to do so can result in a threat to his or her health and safety.
There are various reasons as to why an older person might be unable to adequately care for themselves. It is quite common for an individual to have an undiagnosed or untreated mental health issue; when combined with other situations, such as physical impairment, social isolation, malnutrition, substance abuse, or limited financial resources, it creates a very difficult situation for the older adult.
If you have a family member or friend whom you suspect may be suffering from self-neglect, it’s important to step in and ascertain if the individual is in fact susceptible to any of these conditions; keep in mind, an older adult may be resistant to assistance. Prior experiences may not have been positive, so trust must be developed in order to work with the individual.
Here are some things to look for if you’re concerned for an older adult:
1. Malnourishment - poor nutrition can lead to weight loss.
2. Overmedication - substance abuse can be a response to stress, loss, or anxiety.
3. Social isolation - lack of a social network or support can lead to depression.
4. Poverty - many older adults are forced to choose between food, housing, and medication.
The older adult should be evaluated to make sure they’re not suffering from depression or other mental conditions. Many times the individual doesn’t know how to help themselves, even if they understand they’re not caring for themselves the way they should.
