Russell seeks 2nd term as Kane County coroner

Coroner Rob Russell’s conflicts with the Kane County Board aren’t stopping him from seeking a second term in office.

“I feel I’m still called to be here,” he said Thursday. “I have not been deterred at all.”

Russell, a Republican, defeated Democrat Tao Martinez in 2012. He campaigned on promises he would restore integrity to an office previously marked by controversy.

In a news release announcing his candidacy for 2016, Russell listed several accomplishments during his first term, including entombing more than 50 unclaimed cremated remains found on an office shelf; establishing the coroner’s office as a prescription drug drop-off site; and restoring relationships with police, fire officials, hospitals and funeral homes.

His crowning achievement was achieving national accreditation for the office, the release stated.

“I think most people realize that I’m a worker,” Russell said.

Although the to-do list is shorter than when he first took office, Russell said work remains to be done, and he will continue his efforts if given a chance.

Russell, who has initiated legal action against the auditor over unpaid bills, said he doesn't think that situation will affect his candidacy.

“I think that those that are rational and look at it from an objective point of view, they can see what I’ve done, and I think they are pleased with the way the office has progressed,” Russell said.

Russell is the first person to publicly announce a bid for coroner in the 2016 election.
