WOODSTOCK – There are three instances when a coach can expect to get a great effort from his or her team: homecoming, senior night and when playing a cross-town rival.
On Thursday night, Woodstock and Woodstock North renewed their girls volleyball rivalry, and in a tight match that went three sets, Woodstock came out on top, 25-20, 15-25, 25-17, in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division match at Woodstock High School.
Both teams came ready to play Thursday. Each team sustained long rallies, and the energy was present throughout the match. In the first set, Woodstock (14-15, 4-7 FVC Fox) took six out of seven points late and hung on for the 25-20 victory.
In the second set, it was North’s turn, as the Thunder (6-16, 0-11) went ahead for good on six straight service points by sophomore Veronica Grover to pull ahead 15-9, and the Thunder cruised from there.
In the third set, behind some dominant net play by Amanda Gelasi and Alex Muschong, Woodstock jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
“We didn’t really use the momentum to our advantage in that second game, and that really cost us," Gelasi said. “Our sense of urgency picked up in the third game, and that showed with how we played early on, jumping out to a quick lead. We are gaining a lot of confidence as the season progresses.”
North closed to within three points after six straight service points by Maddie Busch, but Woodstock made the plays when it mattered most and held on to win the third set and take the match.
The Thunder were led by Sarah Kopp with 13 digs, Busch with eight kills, and Danielle Chamberlain with 12 assists.
“I really thought we played our best match of the season tonight,” North coach Greg Bruns said. “Both teams played well tonight, and it was a hard-fought match.”
The Blue Streaks were led by Georgia Wicker with 33 digs, Madelyn Spear with 12 kills, and Autumn Overly with 13 assists.
“You can always expect a close, tough match when Woodstock and Woodstock North play each other,” Woodstock coach Meghan Mullaney said. “When our middles play well, we usually win, and that was the case tonight.”
