Area Roundup: Minooka among favorites in 23rd Strikefest

JOLIET – Minooka will be among the favorites and Morris also is entered in the 23rd annual Strikefest Girls Bowling Tournament on Saturday at Town & Country Lanes on West Jefferson Street in Joliet.

The 44 teams that are entered include 16 that qualified for state last year, including state champion Lockport and defending tournament champion Waubonsie Valley. In addition to Minooka, Lockport and Waubonsie Valley, Collinsville and Harlem are among the favorites.

The tournament is hosted by Plainfield North and its athletic director, Ron Lear.

“This is the top tournament in Illinois every year,” Lear said. “The field is stacked every year with talent from every part of Illinois. This year is no exception, The tournament has become known around the college ranks as the place to recruit talent in Illinois.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Newark 71, Dwight 54: Visiting Newark posted the nonconference victory. Dwight's Drew Travers led all scorers with 20 points.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

MVK Mavervicks: The visiting Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Mavericks eighth-grade boys outscored Saratoga, 15-3, in the fourth quarter to complete a comeback and score a 33-32 victory. The Mavericks (7-3) thus completed Illinois Valley Conference play with a 5-0 record.

Logan Severson’s 3-pointer, the fourth of the second half for MVP, cut the deficit to one point with a minute left. Ben Krause’s back-door layup with 30 seconds remaining was the game-winner. Cody Carey led MVK with 15 points. Krause chipped in eight points, six in the final quarter. Severson added six.

In the seventh-grade game, Saratoga scored a 27-18 victory. The game was tied, 14-14, at halftime. MVK (6-4, 2-3) was led by Ethan Brockman’s 10 points. Chase Hauch chipped in six points and three steals.

PUNT, PASS & KICK

Addison Cailteux a winner: Addison Cailteux of Channahon competed in the girls ages 6-7 Punt, Pass & Kick competition and advanced to the point where she was on the field before last weekend's Bears game against San Francisco at Soldier Field.

Cailteux won the local competition at Channahon, the sectional in Woodridge and the Bears team competition at the Walter Payton Center in River Forest. That allowed her to be at Soldier Field to participate in a pregame passing exhibition.
