Petrie earns Eagle Scout rank

Jack Petrie, son of Travis and Katie Petrie, was recently presented the Eagle Scout Award, Scouting’s highest honor at a Court of Honor by Boy Scout Troop 33 in DeKalb.

Petrie began his scouting career as a Cub Scout with Pack 134 in Cortland where he earned the Arrow of Light Award. Petrie joined Boy Scout Troop 33 in the spring of 2012 and has enjoyed years of active participation in day trips, service projects, weekend overnights, disaster relief projects, fundraisers, and high adventure plus four years of summer camp at Camp Lowden near Oregon, Illinois.

Petrie worked at three EF4 tornado disaster relief projects. The first project took him to Harrisburg, Illinois, followed by projects in Washington, Illinois, and Fairdale.

Petrie’s winter adventures included several Klondike Derby events plus the Spearhead program at Tomahawk Scout Reservation in Wisconsin which included cross-country skiing and learning to build a quinzee snow shelter where he slept overnight in minus 5-degree temperatures. At Lac Vieux Desert, along Michigan’s border with Wisconsin, he caught several Northern Pike while on an ice fishing trip.

Petrie enjoyed beginner backpacking trips in Illinois. Later, with experience, he backpacked at Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin, Yellow River State Forest in Iowa and Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. He also experienced rock climbing along the Red River Gorge in Kentucky and kayaking on the Little Miami River in Ohio.

Petrie is a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society. He earned 34 merit badges.

Petrie’s Eagle Project involved rebuilding a weathered pedestrian bridge at Lions Park in Cortland. He is a freshman at DeKalb High School.
