In order to make your hearing aids last and to maintain the best hearing quality it’s important to keep your earbuds clean.
Earbuds, the part of a hearing aid that fits inside your ear, accumulate earwax, which can clog them, reducing hearing quality. Although your hearing health professional should clean your hearing aids at every appointment, you should also clean your earbuds daily.
Special tools are available for cleaning hearing aids, like a wax pick and brush. Large amounts of earwax can clog the microphone or receiver of a hearing aid, which can then create a static or feedback sound, says healthyhearing.org.
According to audiologyawareness.com, earbuds, or earmolds, should be cleaned by wiping them with a soft, dry cloth or tissue. This removes any earwax or body oils that may have collected during the day. If wax has entered into the thin tube of the earmold remove the earmold from the hearing aid and run warm, but not hot, water over the earmold and through the tubing. It’s very important to make certain that you do NOT put the hearing aid in the water, only your earbuds. Do not use cleaning wipes with chemicals or alcohol because they could cause damage. The earmold can then be set out to dry overnight before it is reconnected to the hearing aid, or use a hearing aid dryer (not a hair dryer) to dry the earbud.
To keep earbuds as clean as possible apply any hair product before before putting in your hearing aid. Healthy Hearing also advises
Healthy Hearing says it’s normal for earbuds to have a slight odor, but you should see a hearing health professional if you notice a strong foul odor, which could indicate an outer ear infection.
