Glen Ellyn District 41 Facilities Task Force continues to study district's space needs

GLEN ELLYN – The District 41 Facilities Task Force needs more time to look at the Glen Ellyn district's space needs before it makes a presentation to the school board.

The task force's mission is to create a long-term solution that will eliminate the 10 portable classrooms at Hadley Junior High School. The group also is studying how the district can provide space for full-day kindergarten if it is implemented and addressing deficiencies at each of the schools in the district.

It began meeting in August 2015 and originally was going to present its report to the Board of Education at its regular meeting Jan. 25.

The task force now plans to present its final report to the board March 21. It will give an update to board members on its efforts at the board's Jan. 25 meeting.

"This is a huge decision that will impact our community long term one way or the other," said Lori Taylor, who co-chairs the task force with Tom Voltaggio. "We wanted to be mindful of that and not rush."

The task force currently is studying different solutions for Hadley, Taylor said. She said a wide range of opinions is represented on the task force.

"You have people who believe we shouldn't do anything to people who think we should do everything, fix it all, and everything in between that," Taylor said. "I think that when the recommendation comes out, our hope is that the community will see that we tried to look at every different scenario in terms of where people are in our community."

Voltaggio said the school board directed the task force to find solutions that would eliminate the portable classrooms at Hadley.

"Any solution that doesn't do that really isn't a solution," he said.
