STANDARD — Raymond “Ray” William Barnes, 89, of Standard died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru.
Ray was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Standard to Harry and Liz (Bean) Barnes. He married Marge Steinbach on June 21, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Church in LaSalle.
He served in the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Navel Base. Ray was the owner and operator of Barnes Trucking in Standard from 1944 to 1983. He was road commissioner for Granville Township for more than 30 years and retired in 2008.
Ray was a member of the Standard Fire Department for more than 60 years, the Ladd Moose Lodge, Sacred Heart Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. He was a former teamster for Local 722 and past trustee for the village of Standard from 1965 to 1985.
Surviving are his wife, Marge of Standard; four daughters, Linda (Jim) Carboni of Granville, Lee Ann (Rich) Weddell of Hennepin, Jean (Ron) DiPietro of Princeton and Mary Kay (Tom) Nestler of Spring Valley. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Esther, Gladys, Lucille and Shirley; two brothers, Jim and Alvin; and one granddaughter, Nichole.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Fr. Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. A bell service for fire departments will be at 6 p.m. with a walk through, line-up will start at 5:30 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. An additional visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m., with prayers at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Richie Weddell, Chris Weddell, Aaron Weddell, Jimmy Carboni, Andrew Carboni, Matthew Carboni, Michael DiPietro and Steven Nestler.
