Joliet reviews vicious dog ordinance

JOLIET – Joliet City Council members are set to review Monday proposed changes in the city’s vicious dog ordinance.

The city is not putting more teeth into the ordinance – so to speak.

The changes primarily are designed for clarification, said City Attorney Marty Shanahan.

“It clarifies a lot of procedural items,” Shanahan said.

The changes in the city ordinance on vicious and dangerous dogs have been in the works for months. But they are being brought for review by the Land Use and Legislative Committee a little more than a week after a pit bull attack in the Timbers Edge subdivision.

On Jan. 15, a dog suffered 50 puncture wounds and its owner was bitten so hard that her wrist was broken when attacked by two loose pit bulls.

Shanahan said the changes in the ordinance are not related to the attack.

The committee also is slated to get an update on an ordinance aimed at restricting sales of dogs and cats in pet stores. The ordinance was previously tabled and is not scheduled for action Monday.

The committee meets at 5 p.m. in the the council chambers at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St.
