Wheaton North’s wrestling team had a pair of dominant wins and a hard-fought loss at the Downers Grove South mega duals Jan. 23.
The Falcons topped Rockford East 66-12 and defeated Romeoville 66-0. In a dual that came down to the last bout, North fell 28-25 against Downers Grove South.
Bob Wall won by fall at 220 pounds against Downers Grove South, Devin Donovan picked up a 13-4 major decision at 160, and Bryce Thurston won by forfeit at 132. Chase Balosky (113), Jamie Suarez (120) and Duncan Nelson (152) also were winners against DGS.
In the dual against Rockford East, Anthony Indelli (106), Balosky, Suarez, Jaylin Griffin (126), Riley Lomenick (145), Nelson, Donovan, Brandon Gambill (170), Connor Cleveland (182), Bo Niedbala (195), Wall and Nick Yanan (285) were winners.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Francis
The Spartans picked up back-to-back wins against Providence (60-45 on Jan. 23) and Wheaton Academy (49-24 on Jan. 25) to make it six wins in their last eight games.
Wheaton Academy
Elizabeth Melby scored 12 points, but it wasn’t enough in a 49-24 loss against St. Francis on Jan. 25.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Francis
Gabriel Johnson scored 11 points, but it wasn’t enough in a 52-42 loss against Aurora Christian on Jan. 23.
Tim Lilly scored eight points and Nick Cooney had seven for the Spartans, who will look to get back on track against Montini at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29.
Wheaton Academy
Tommy Blum scored the first eight points for Wheaton Academy, and the Warriors held off a furious Chicago Christian rally for a 59-58 overtime win Jan. 22.
Blum finished with 21 points, seven coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Anthony Polinksi finished with 20 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Jameson Teuscher scored nine points, Dave Vasko finished with five, and JD Gunn scored four in the win.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
Wheaton co-op
In its final meet before starting the postseason Jan. 29 with the DuPage Valley Conference meet, the Wheaton co-op scored a 142.4 to top Naperville Central (89.3) in a Jan. 21 dual.
Julie Galo won on vault (9.45) and floor (9.3) while Petra Chino won on uneven bars (9.45) and beam (9.05).
Galo won the all-around with a score of 35.9. Laura Hughes was second (34.1) and Jill Horvatin took third (33.4).
BOYS BOWLING
Wheaton North
James Holm had a total pinfall of 1,319 at the Lake Park sectional Jan. 23, good for a ninth-place finish and a berth at the state tournament.
The senior will hit the lanes at state at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon on Jan. 29 and 30.
COMPETITIVE DANCE
St. Francis
With a score of 86.07, the Spartans placed fifth in a Class 2A sectional at Andrew on Jan. 23 and locked up a state berth.
The state competition takes place in Bloomington on Jan. 29 and 30.
Wheaton Warrenville South
The Tigers finished third with a score of 87.83 at a Class 3A sectional at Rolling Meadows High School on Jan. 23. The Tigers advance to the state competition Jan. 29 and 30.
