High school sports roundup: Winning weekend for Lyons Township girls basketball

Lyons Township’s girls basketball team won a pair of West Suburban Silver games on back-to-back days to run its winning streak to four games.

The Lions defeated York 50-36 on Jan. 29, then followed up with a 48-39 victory against Downers Grove North the next day.

LT was scheduled to face rival Hinsdale Central on Feb. 2 before closing out WSS play against Oak Park-River Forest on Feb. 5.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs’ winning streak reached four games with a 59-46 win against Leyden on Jan. 29. That victory came on the heels of a 50-40 win against Wheaton Academy on Jan. 28 in a Metro Suburban West game.

BOYS BOWLING

Lyons Township

Jack McGuinn finished strong at the state meet, making a move up to finish in eighth place individually Jan. 30 with a pinfall total of 2,793.

After one day of bowling, McGuinn was 18th with 1,363 pins. He jumped up 10 spots as he had a 1,430 pinfall on the second day of the tourney.

LT’s Colin Temple finished 67th with a total of 2,436.

WRESTLING

Nazareth

Blaine Bilek placed third at 160 pounds and Brian Kavanaugh was fourth at 170 at the East Suburban Catholic Conference tournament Jan. 29.

Lyons Township

The Lions won eight matches and topped Glenbard West 35-24 in a West Suburban Silver dual meet Jan. 29.

Keith Schroeder (132 pounds) and Mac Casella (138) both won by fall. Johnny Mologousis won by technical fall at 160.

Elias Garcia (120), Zach Villarreal (126) and Howard Willis (145) had major decisions, and Ezra Avery (182) and Frank Walsh (220) were winners by decision for LT.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Lyons Township

Sarah Halm was second on uneven bars (9.3), Olivia Kalata was third on floor (9.125), and Julia Cozzi placed third on beam (8.825) for LT’s best finishes at the West Suburban Silver meet Jan. 30.

Kalata was fourth in the all-around (35.475), and the Lions were second as a team with a score of 137.35.

Riverside Brookfield

Kate Polanski scored an 8.85 and finished fifth on vault for the Bulldogs’ best finish at the Independent Conference meet Jan. 30.

Olivia Weimer tied for eighth on beam (8.6) and was 13th in the all-around (33.1). RB placed eighth with a team score of 128.95.

CHEERLEADING

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs scored an 86.77 to finish fourth in the medium team division at the Joliet West sectional Jan. 30. RB advances to the state competition at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington on Feb. 5 and 6.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners scored an 80.60 and placed eighth in the medium team division at the Joliet West sectional Jan. 8.
