Caskets manufactured from steel are available in a variety of finishes, grades and styles. Just like wood caskets can be made from oak, poplar or other types, steel caskets can be fashioned from bronze, copper, stainless steel or standard steel. The major feature difference between wood and steel caskets is in the way the casket lid closes against the shell, explains Matt Boyle, a funeral director and embalmer with Adolf Funeral & Cremation Services.
"There are two main types of steel caskets," Matt says. "One type has a rubber gasket between the lid and the shell. It forms a protective seal against the elements." Caskets with this feature are typically within a $1,300-$1,500 price range.
Non gasket caskets - which still offer durability - are usually priced between $850-$1,350, Matt says.
Steel caskets are available in 16, 18, or 20 gauge steel. The gauge number refers to the thickness of the steel, with 16 as the thickest.
A wide selection of personalized features and colors make steel caskets an attractive choice for giving loved ones a dignified final resting place, Matt adds.
