Salvador W. Garcia

STERLING – Salvador W. Garcia, 90, of Sterling, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at his home.

Born Dec. 6, 1925, in Dixon, he was a son of Joseph and Barbara (Steanz) Garcia. He was united in marriage to Delores M. Seidel on March 25, 1948, in Sterling. She preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 2005.

Mr. Garcia was a veteran of the Army, private 1st class, and proudly served in Europe as a tank gunner during World War II, with the 22nd Tank Battalion, 4th Armor Division, from August 1943 until December 1945. He enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, fishing, camping, and woodworking. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, and loved going to Chicago Cubs games. His passion was supporting his grandchildren at their sporting events. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Sterling American Legion Post 296, and Dixon Elks Lodge.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Barbara Tretteen of Sterling, Josie (Tom) Gascoigne of Sterling, Carol (Craig) Stumpf and Michael (Sue) Garcia, both of Dixon, Joseph (Denise) Garcia of Sterling, Elizabeth (Denis) Perret of Parker, Colorado, and Robert Garcia of Chicago; three sisters, Connie (Larry) Cervantes of Sterling, Rachel (Stan) Bance of Rock Island, and Rebecca Marroquin of East Peoria; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Garcia; and four sisters, Angelina Esparza, Rose Ferguson, Victoria Troxell, and Gloria Garcia in infancy.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m., with the rosary recited at
12:30 p.m., Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Adalberto Sanchez, celebrant, officiating. Burial, with full military honors accorded by Sterling American Legion Post 296, will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.

A memorial has been established.
