Since May 24, 1926, when the Rialto Square Theatre opened, it has been considered one of the ten most beautiful theatres in the United States. The combination of Greek, Roman and Byzantine architecture gives the vaudeville movie palace a unique elegance. “The Rialto is an architectural marvel that provides the greater Joliet and Will County area an opportunity to appreciate world class music, theatre and popular entertainment in downtown Joliet,” said Director of Marketing Annette Parker.
This year the iconic venue is celebrating 90 years of entertaining all ages. Special programs, activities and tours are planned for all to enjoy. "We're all very excited about the significant milestone the Rialto is reaching and the events planned to celebrate the 90th Anniversary," Parker said. "We're welcoming everyone to attend the FREE birthday celebration on May 24th that includes tours, silent movies and, of course, birthday cake. The Duchess chandelier will be lowered for viewing then raised to the ceiling during a champagne toast. The public is invited to be a part of history as everyone in attendance may sign an oversized birthday card and be included in a celebratory group picture in the Rotunda that will be shared for all to remember."
Other 90th Anniversary events include Organ Extravaganza XX – Keyboard Pops Concert, the Broadway performance of Saturday Night Fever, Vince Gill, Mary Poppins - the Movie, Michael Carbonaro, Artrageous - the interactive art and music experience, special FREE tours with organ concerts May 3, 10, & 17, birthday party celebration, and Joliet Chamber Business After Hours. Details and information about all the events can be found at www.rialtosquare.com.
“During the 90th Anniversary celebration, we all will be recalling a part of the Rialto past and looking forward toward its future,” Parker stated.
