High school boys track and field: Five to watch

Luke Beattie, Woodstock, senior

Beattie finished third in the Class 2A 3,200 meters at last year’s state meet and took ninth in the Class 2A cross country state meet, his third time earning all-state honors. Beattie will run at Utah State next year.

Tim McCloyn, Huntley, senior

McCloyn will play football at Illinois State University next year, but first will give the defending Fox Valley Conference team champion Red Raiders some versatility. He had the area’s best shot put this indoor season (56-2 1/2) and has the best discus throw of any returning athlete. He also excels in the 4x100 relay.

Keagan Smith, Huntley, senior

Smith has three state cross country medals and earned his first in track in last year’s Class 3A 1,600 meters, where he was eighth. Smith. who will run for the U.S. Military Academy next year, will be aiming to improve on that finish this season.

Matt Stelmasek, Johnsburg, senior

Stelmasek took second in the Class 2A 3,200 at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic last week. He was part of the Skyhawks’ 4x800 relay team that was Class 2A runner-up at the state meet, but will focus on individual races this season.

Kevin Szamlewski, McHenry, senior

Szamlewski performed his career-best 15-0 to take second in the Class 3A pole vault at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic. He won the pole vault at the McHenry County and FVC meets last season.
