Athlete of the Week
Luke Tevyaw
Crystal Lake Central, sr., P-1B
Tevyaw threw a three-hitter, striking out nine, and delivered a walk-off double as the Tigers beat Prairie Ridge, 3-2, Saturday, ending the Wolves’ 17-game winning streak.
Tevyaw issued only one walk in the game and was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The senior left-hander had two other standout performances last week, starting with Monday’s two-hitter in a 2-0 win against Woodstock North. He struck out 11 and walked one in that game. That gave him 20 strikeouts and five hits allowed in 14 innings for the week.
Tevyaw also was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs in Central’s 9-5 loss to Crystal Lake South on Thursday.
Northwest Herald Power Rankings
1. Prairie Ridge (26-6): The Wolves' winning streak was stopped at 17 by Crystal Lake Central on Saturday, but because they beat the Nos. 2 and 3 teams this season and those teams both lost this week, as well, they stay at No. 1.
2. Cary-Grove (21-8): The Trojans had an 11-game winning streak stopped by Crystal Lake South on Friday, 8-4, after the Gators rallied from a 4-0 deficit. They bounced back Saturday to beat South, 4-0, and reclaim a half-game lead in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division.
3. Crystal Lake South (22-4): The Gators' nine-game winning streak was snapped by C-G on Saturday, but they are right behind the Trojans in the FVC Valley with two games remaining.
4. Crystal Lake Central (14-13): What is the only team in the area to beat C-G, Jacobs and Prairie Ridge? It's Crystal Lake Central, which makes its first appearance in the top five. The overall record isn't that impressive, but the quality wins are.
5. Jacobs (18-11): The Golden Eagles went 3-1 for the week but suffered a tough loss when senior pitcher-first baseman Casey Dennison's high school career was ended with a broken hand.
Noteworthy
Tigers receive help: Earlier in the season, Crystal Lake Central coach Tom Mueller was concerned about two key players, Frank Berg and Camden Nisenson, battling injuries. Both are back making impacts for the Tigers.
Berg returned a while back. Nisenson, a sophomore, came back from a sore elbow more recently and has fit in nicely in right field and the No. 2 spot in the order. Nisenson is hitting .369 with an on-base percentage of .448. He has nine hits and has walked four times in 29 plate appearances.
“[Nisenson] has really made a difference and helped our team get better,” Mueller said. “His speed in the outfield and on the bases has really been a boost for us.”
