High school sports roundup: Hinsdale Central's Leahy, Hinsdale South's Lipscomb all-state in gymnastics

Hinsdale South's Yang a badminton state champ, Hinsdale Central sends eight entries to girls state track meet

Hinsdale Central’s Ryan Leahy earned a score of 8.65 for an all-state fourth-place finish on high bar at the state meet at Hinsdale Central on May 14.

Leahy was an event finalist on parallel bar (seventh, 8.45) and floor exercise (10th, 7.7) and a state qualifier in the all-around (seventh, 51.30) and on pommel horse, rings and vault.

Nolan Holmes (vault), Chris Kujalowicz (floor, parallel bars, vault), Alex Roca (floor, high bar, rings) and Zhiyi Zhu (rings) also were state qualifiers for Central.

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Hinsdale South

Kwame Lipscomb scored a 9.3 on floor exercise at the state meet May 14, tying for fourth place and earning an all-state medal in the process.

Lipscomb placed 14th in the all-around with a score of 49.45 and also was a state qualifier on high bar, rings and vault. AJ Lampkin made it to state on vault.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils started the postseason in dominant fashion May 17, defeating host Argo 8-0 in a Class 3A regional semifinal.

The Red Devils will face Oak Park-River Forest in the regional championship match at noon May 21. Central topped OPRF 1-0 on May 5 in a West Suburban Silver contest.

Hinsdale South

The Hornets had little trouble with host Brooks in a Class 2A regional semifinal May 17, winning 9-0. South will play either Crete-Monee or Rich South in the regional final at 5 p.m. May 21.

BASEBALL

Hinsdale Central

Alex Herbst scored twice and Peter Pigatti had an RBI double, but the Red Devils fell 5-3 against Glenbard West on May 16.

The Red Devils have regular-season games against Proviso East (May 20), Metea Valley (May 21) and Stagg (May 24) before opening the Class 4A playoffs against Metea Valley on May 26 in a semifinal game of the Metea Valley regional.

Hinsdale South

John Stoltz drove in three runs and Mike Nicosia, Zach Duffy and Danny Mazzei each scored twice in a 9-3 win against Downers Grove North on May 17.

The Hornets improved to 29-5 with the win and had one more regular-season game against Glenbard South (May 23) before starting postseason play. South is the No. 2 seed in the Oswego sectional and will play either No. 15 DGN or No. 18 Wheaton Warrenville South in a regional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. May 26.

BADMINTON

Hinsdale Central

The doubles team of Angela Li and Lana Millman went 6-2 for a top-eight finish at the state tournament. The duo was 1-1 in the main draw before winning five straight matches in the backdraw.

Honor Crandell and Cindy Tang both reached the fifth round of consolation play in singles before being knocked out. Tang won her first two matches and finished the tourney with a 3-2 record. Crandell dropped her first match and then won four straight as she went 4-2 in the tourney.

Bonnie Budelman and June Wang were 1-2 in the doubles bracket, and the Red Devils scored nine points and tied for fifth place in the state.

Hinsdale South

Judy Yang settled for second-place showings at the state tournament in 2014 and 2015.

There was no settling this time around.

The junior won all seven matches in two games, including 25-23, 25-20 against Neuqua Valley’s Lauren Ho in the championship, to bring home the singles title May 14 at the state tournament at Eastern Illinois University.

The all-senior doubles team of Jacque Cameli and Caroline Lee went 5-2 in the doubles bracket, including quarterfinal and semifinal wins in the backdraw, to finish sixth. The pair won three times in the main draw. Senior Sarah Puz and junior Imani Williams went 2-2 in doubles play, and senior Sara Temelkova competed in two singles matches at state.

The Hornets brought home a state trophy after placing second as a team with 13 points. Neuqua won the title with 21 points.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils won two events and earned six additional state meet berths at the Class 3A Lockport sectional May 12.

Reilly Revord won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:01.39, finishing ahead of teammate Anne Zaher (second, 5:05.85).

Revord and Zaher ran the last two legs of the 4x800 relay behind Bella Pisani and Grace McCabe as they won in 9:20.53.

Elle Bergevin (5 feet, 5 inches) was second in high jump, Ugochi Ihemeson (117-11) was third in discus, and Katie Sluman (12.49 seconds) was fourth in the 100 dash.

The 4x400 team of Madeline Sullivan, Ellie Geier, Monica Bhagavan and Sluman (second, 4:03.19) and the 4x200 team of Bhagavan, Kya Collier, Sullivan and Sluman (third, 1:43.88) earned state berths.

The state meet takes place May 20 and 21 at Eastern Illinois University.

Hinsdale South

Raquel Blumenstein (36 feet, 11 inches) was third and Marie-Paul Moukiama (36-9) placed fourth in the triple jump at the Class 3A Lockport sectional May 12 to earn state meet berths. The state meet takes place May 20 and 21 at Eastern Illinois University.

SOFTBALL

Hinsdale Central

Courtney Berlin struck out six and yielded five hits, but the Red Devils lost 1-0 against Lyons Township on May 16.

Central is the No. 7 seed in the Class 4A Marist sectional and will start postseason play against No. 10 Reavis at 4:30 p.m. May 25 in a semifinal of the Reavis regional.

Hinsdale South

Sarah Hanson homered twice, drove in four runs and scored three times and Kaitlyn Little added a three-run home run in an 11-0 win against Morton on May 17. Madison Kern surrendered just one hit in a complete-game victory.

The Hornets, the No. 13 seed in the Class 4A Marist sectional, will host a regional and will start the playoffs at 4:30 p.m. May 23 against No. 20 Curie.
